Scammers Are Using Hacked Verified PayPal Accounts to Send Micropayments — Here’s How the New $0.02 Scam Works

A New PayPal Scam Is Spreading — And It Starts With a $0.02 Payment

A growing number of people are reporting a strange new PayPal scam that begins with a tiny, unexpected payment — usually $0.01 or $0.02 — sent from what appears to be a legitimate, verified PayPal account.

The email notification comes from service@paypal.com, the real PayPal address. The formatting is real. The security footer is real. Your name appears correctly.

But the message inside the transaction is not from PayPal at all.

When you open the payment details, you find a fake warning message typed into the memo field — often mentioning crypto payouts, unauthorized charges, or urgent account issues. The memo then instructs you to take immediate action.

This is the scam.

How the Scam Actually Works

1. Scammers hack verified PayPal accounts

Instead of creating fake accounts, scammers break into real, long-standing PayPal accounts that already have verified status, a clean transaction history, a real identity attached, and PayPal’s trust.

Because these accounts are legitimate, PayPal treats their outgoing payments as normal — which means the scammer’s tiny payment triggers a real PayPal email that lands safely in your inbox.

This is what makes the scam so convincing.

2. They send victims a tiny “micropayment”

Usually $0.02. This costs the scammer almost nothing, but it forces PayPal to generate an official notification email. Victims see the PayPal branding and assume the message is trustworthy.

3. They weaponize the memo field

This is the heart of the scam. The scammer types a fake warning into the memo, such as claims about crypto transactions, threats of large upcoming charges, statements that your account is compromised, or instructions to take urgent action.

PayPal simply displays whatever the sender typed — even if it’s fraudulent. This loophole allows scammers to insert alarming text into a legitimate PayPal email.

4. The goal is to push you into contacting the scammer

The memo often includes instructions to call a fake support line, visit a fraudulent website, or respond urgently to “verify” your account.

If you follow these instructions, scammers will pretend to be PayPal, claim your account is at risk, ask for login codes or personal information, or attempt to access your device or accounts.

The micropayment is just bait to get your attention.

Why This Scam Is So Effective

The email is genuinely from PayPal. The sender account is verified. The subject line is alarming. The message appears inside a real PayPal transaction.

What To Do If You Receive One of These Payments

Do NOT follow any instructions in the memo. Log into PayPal directly. Report the transaction to PayPal. Do NOT refund the payment. Enable two-factor authentication.

What If You Already Responded to the Memo?

If you contacted the scammer or followed their instructions: stop communication immediately, change your PayPal password, enable 2-step verification, review your recent activity for unauthorized transactions, and contact PayPal through their official website.

Final Thoughts

This scam is dangerous because it uses a real PayPal email, a real verified account, a real transaction, and a fake memo designed to create panic.

It’s a clever abuse of a legitimate system. But once you know the signs, it becomes easy to spot.
